Suckers
Caught in and around the Narrows of Lake Winnipeg, these suckers have a hint of emerald green on their backs, making them a great choice for big game fish. They are available fresh frozen in various sizes 12 inches and under.
Cisco (Tullibee)
The Larger Predator Fish in Manitoba like this best. Its a member of of the Whitefish family and commonly caught in the Hecla/Grindstone area. They are available fresh frozen 12 inches or under.
Pickerel Fillets
The flavour is sweet and mild and is great for people who are looking for a fish without that “fishy taste” Pickerel is wonderful pan-fried or deep-fried with a crispy breading or batter. Pickerel is also nice baked and is also firm enough to BBQ. Available as regular – baby and large with y bone out. People also refer to them a walleye. Native to our area is the famous Greenbacks!
Pickerel Cheeks
Season with salt and fresh cracked pepper. Cook for 1-2 minutes until nicely browned. Turn cheeks over and brown 1-2 minutes on other side and season with salt, pepper, and some fresh herbs if desired. Serve the walleye cheeks on a bed of lightly sautéed greens, such as arugula or spinach, as an appetizer.
Pickerel Wings
The fins are basically nature’s toothpicks, but you can also eat them. They taste like fish-flavored potato chips when deep fried.

After cooling the fish to room temperature, you can eat them as is. I like to flake off a couple of cups of meat, make it into patties, and grill them like burgers, served with all the fixings.
